Hardpack, gravel and rock reward a different tread than mud does. Tall, widely spaced lugs that clear muck tend to squirm and wear fast on hard ground. Hard terrain ATV tires use a tighter tread with more rubber on the ground for grip, steering response and wear life. Tires4That carries hard terrain ATV and UTV tires from ITP, Carlstar, Duro, QuadBoss, Interco, Galaxy, OTR and Titan.
When to Choose a Hard Terrain Tire
Pick a hard terrain tire if most of your riding is on packed dirt, gravel roads, rocky trails or pavement between properties. Ranch and farm machines that run lanes and gravel more than fields are a common fit. If you split time between hard ground and wet pasture, an all-terrain ATV tire is the better compromise, and mud and snow ATV tires suit loose, wet ground.
Ply Rating for Rocky Ground
Rock and gravel are where sidewall punctures happen. Hard terrain tires come in 2 to 8 ply ratings, and a 6 or 8 ply tire gives more puncture resistance and load capacity for work machines and rocky trails. Radial sizes, marked with an R as in 27x9R-14, ride smoother at speed on hard surfaces.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What are hard terrain ATV tires?
A: Hard terrain ATV tires use a tighter, lower tread pattern built for hardpack, gravel, rock and pavement. More rubber contacts the ground, which improves grip, steering and wear on hard surfaces.
Q: Are hard terrain tires good in mud?
A: Not as good as a mud tire. Their tighter tread doesn't clear mud as well, so choose all-terrain or mud and snow tires if you ride wet ground often.
Q: What ply rating is best for rocky trails?
A: A 6 or 8 ply tire offers more puncture resistance and load capacity, which helps on sharp rock and with work loads.
Q: What does the R in a size like 27x9R-14 mean?
A: R means radial construction, which generally rides smoother and handles better at speed on hard surfaces.
Q: What brands of hard terrain ATV tires do you carry?
A: ITP, Carlstar (formerly Carlisle), Duro, QuadBoss, Interco, Galaxy, OTR and Titan.
Q: Is shipping free on hard terrain ATV tires?
A: Yes, ground shipping is free on all orders within the continental US, and orders placed by 3 pm ET typically ship the same business day.
